Harnessing the Full Power of Mathcad Prime 10

Posted by Concurrent Engineering on 25-Sep-2024 09:57:59

In Spring 2024, PTC launched its latest version of Mathcad Prime. Designed to empower engineers to make advanced calculations with transparency, efficiency and precision, Mathcad Prime 10 delivers a wide range of new features.

Having spent the last few months getting to grips with this new solution, engineers are praising Mathcad Prime 10 for its usability and performance enhancements. In this article, we’ll tell you more about some of them.

Worksheet improvements

In prior versions of Mathcad Prime, users could include worksheets where values from one worksheet could be transferred and used in others. Prime 10 improves this capability by enabling users to open the included worksheet directly by hovering over the file path, holding down CTRL, and clicking the link.

In addition, Mathcad Prime 10 builds on Prime 9’s new internal link feature. Now, users can link to specific regions on other worksheets. To do this, you must assign a tag to the region in the linked worksheet. Reference the tag by typing ‘#’ followed by the tag name at the end of the file name.

Text improvements

Mathcad Prime 9 delighted engineers by adding text styles. Prime 10 takes this a step further by allowing subscripts and superscripts in text, improving readability and ease of input. You no longer need to type awkward formats like ‘m^2’ for square meters. It’s bound to make your engineering documentation much clearer.

Symbolic engine improvements

Mathcad Prime 10’s symbolic engine has received a significant overhaul, making symbolic calculations more flexible. If you prefer symbolic solutions over numeric solutions, these enhancements will make your day:

  • Expanded keyword ‘fully’ – The symbolic engine now has new modifiers for the keyword ‘fully’, giving you more control over how solutions are displayed
  • ‘Rewrite’ keyword improvements – The rewrite keyword has been improved, allowing you to rewrite expressions in your own specified terms
  • ‘Simplify’ keyword improvements – This keyword now incorporates the ‘rewrite’ keyword
  • New ‘standard’ keyword – This new keyword allows you to obtain the integration result without the integration constant

Advanced controls added

Mathcad Prime 10 adds new advanced controls, including:

  • List box
  • Checkbox
  • Radio button
  • Slider
  • Button

These new controls allow users to reuse worksheets more efficiently, or if you want to create standard calculation sheets with consistent inputs. The outputs generated by these advanced controls are unitless, so it’s essential to attach the correct units to the values to ensure accuracy in your calculations.

Prime 10 also introduces powerful new advanced controls for scripting. If you’re proficient in scripting languages like VBScript or Jscript, you’ll be able to make the most of these new capabilities. If you’re thinking of learning a new scripting language, it’s advisable to go for Jscript. This is because Microsoft is phasing out VBScript.

Further improvements

Finally, Mathcad Prime 10 has improved how it uses multithreading to speed up worksheet processing. If you’re well-versed in Mathcad Prime, you will surely notice the difference.
