An Introduction to PTC Windchill PDM Essentials

Windchill PDM EssentialDo you have a central repository for all of your product and product related content? Having a tool or system in place that does this is an essential way for you to be able to store all the information and data that is generated during the product development process, manage version control and ensure that everyone within the design team is clear on how to product is developing.

For smaller organisations, making the leap and introducing a product data management system can seem like a big task. But, actually, having the right tool for your organisation means the process can be made much more straightforward. And PTC Windchill PDM Essential could just be that tool.

How easy is it to add product information to?

With seamless integration to PTC Creo Parametric, it’s simple to add new designs or to update existing ones, as an embedded browser provides quick and easy access to the PDM repository. All you need to do to access it is right click with your mouse on the item, select ‘Check In’ and the item is now stored in Windchill PDM Essentials.

What about finding and managing all of the data?

There is a search tool that is always available in the top right corner. If you enter a search term into this bar, a new window will open, displaying the search results for you. With just one mouse click, you’ll get all of the information about that particular item, including where it was used and what objects are related to it.

On top of this, PTC Creo View, a visualisation tool, is also included. This means that you can easily distribute information about items to people who do not have design tools on their own computer, but need to be able to see and interrogate product models. Reviewing a particular design, making comments or mark-ups and taking measurements can all be done without disturbing the original design file.

Plus, it’s easy to manage documents from within the Microsoft Windows environment. You are able to navigate through Windchill PDM Essentials files as though they are native Windows files. To add a document to Windchill PDM Essentials from this view, you simple drag and drop it into relevant folder.

It helps to manage the approval process

Another feature is the ability to easily manage the entire approval process. Users that are assigned with the approval authority are able to look at the instructions, give their comments and then ultimately decide whether they want to approve or reject the item.

PTC Windchill PDM Essentials will empower smaller organisations to effectively organise and manage their product content. And, because it is built on PTC Windchill (a production proven product lifecycle management software), it not only meets your requirements today, it provides the foundation to scale up with your organisation and to meet your future needs.
